I’m just a very lucky, dirty old man with a wonderful wife. I have opinions on most everything, but will not force them on anyone other than family and friends. They have to suffer with me as no one else.

Learning from By-gone days

Maybe it’s time we learned a few things from by-gone years. I remember a study put out several decades ago which stated the human body was not designed to go without sleep for more than six to eight hours and we also operate better when we sleep six hours or less at a time. So why doesn’t the world operate this way? One reason and one reason only - GREED.

It has been the tradition in many countries to have a “down time” in the afternoon for a nap. You know, they called it a “siesta”. This works fine when everyone does it, but let someone think they can get away with making a little extra cash and the whole thing goes out the window.

The idea of greed and getting ahead in the world has brought us things like stress and ‘fast food’. Why can’t we step back a step or two and relax? Take an afternoon nap; eat a slow dinner a little later in the evening with friends. A ‘new’ study has shown a mid day nap relieves stress and reduces heart attacks. Even in New York they have places you can go for a ‘power nap’. (Leave it to someone to make a buck by having a place for to someone to sleep.)

Have you ever wondered why you get tired and have a hard time staying awake in the afternoon, after a large meal? The answer is simple, your body needs it. When you rest after eating, your body is able to better digest the food you eat. This helps to stop indigestion before it starts and aids your body in using the energy it is getting from the food. Heck, just look at the ‘animal kingdom’ almost all of them sleep after eating. Maybe they aren’t ‘just dumb animals’ after all!

I know many people are going to say “We live in an international world. With so many time zones, there is no way we can just stop for a nap without losing money.” I can understand this and have already come up with a solution to the problem. If you are dealing in the international market, rotate the people doing the work. This way not everyone will lose that nap everyday and it will make people happier in the long run. Happier employees, better work production equals more profit. On the other hand, if you aren’t dealing with the international market, there is really little trouble. Oh, we do have four time zones in the United States, but that can be worked around with little trouble. Besides, with the internet covering the globe, business can be done any time.

Just because you slow the pace a bit doesn’t mean you’re going to lose out. Rather it means you should be able to enjoy what you have more. Having everything does you little to no good if you can’t enjoy it.

New Year

The New Year is when you reset the calendar so everything may start anew. This is way everything is the same, yet different. Maybe now is the time to not only reset the calendar, but the way we look at the year and our lives. Why should we repeat the same mistakes and not learn?
