Why I said it

I have gotten several comments about my last posting. People who know me asked, “Ed, what is wrong with you? You never acted like this before.” I have debated on whether to remove the posting or give an explanation. I’ve decided to explain.

It is not that I feel these people do not deserve help or that this was not a terrible event. In fact I feel the exact opposite.

The problem stems from the fact we, as Americans, are looked at to give, give, and give, no matter the reason. Everyone else is to receive from us, but we cannot receive anything from anyone.

This nation has had many terrible disasters in the past and not one country came to our aid, or even offered. We have had billions and billions of dollars in loss from events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and terrorism. Have you ever seen or heard of anyone offering to help? Even when we ask others to form a coalition to combat world terrorism, we have to fight, twist arms and even bride other nations to join.

Why is it that the world has the United Nations, yet the United States is tasked with the burden of financing aid and squelching regional conflicts? It seems the UN is only the mouthpiece for the world to seek more money from the American tax coffers. We are expected to buy products and services from other nations at a premium price, yet they want us to give them our goods and services for free or at a cost next to nothing.

With this last disaster, I have seen estimates the U.S. will end up forking over close to 100 million dollars in cash, service and materials. This does not include the aid we are already giving the nations of that area. If those figures were to be included, I’m sure the total would be well over a billion dollars.

All this money going out, yet we are called “selfish” and “money grubbers”. We give more and more every year to almost anyone who asks, yet we are hated for it.

I wonder what would happen if the United States stopped giving. Would the other industrial nations step in to replace us, countries like France, Germany or Russia? What about the OPEC nations? They have money flowing in daily from over the globe, yet they seldom give anything away. OPEC holds the purse strings of the world with their oil, why aren’t they called upon to help? Why? Because the US is the powerhouse of freedom, the money tree bearing fruit anyone can pick for free.

I’m sorry, but if the world wants us to pay for everything, they need to stop hating us. Cooperate with us and do the right thing. They need to stop helping terrorist, turn them in and get rid of them, stop petty wars of greed, let the aid we sent to the people, get to the people.

It seems that nowadays, everyone should be working together to a common end, of world peace and harmony. Yet we have racial and religious wars going on over the globe. We have people still oppressing other groups by sex, race and religion. Why?!

If there is going to be a world order and everyone wants us to pay for it, then it is going to be our way! So world beware, the United States people are getting fed up with the way you treat us. We are not the “Dutch” uncle you can take money from, and then talk badly about later. We have the power to make glass out of sand and deserts out forests. Will we ever do it? I don’t really think so, but we could.

Rome was touted as the greatest civilization in the world. They didn’t take any lip or back talk from anyone. That was one of the things that made them great. Once they stopped, they collapsed. We are not Rome, but we may just take a lesson from them and learn from them.

The Tsunami

I am so very sorry to hear of the plight the people of Asia are having to go through, I morn with you. At this time we, in the United States, should not interfere. Though we also lost people, it is not our place to send you money we do not have. Our national budget is at the breaking point with the fight on terror. But you already know that as there are terrorists groups operating in your countries. Maybe this is a sign to show you just what should be done with people that kill innocent people and fight as cowards. Maybe the next time we have a major disaster, you will be able to lend a helping hand. Until then, don’t call us, we’ll call you. NOT!!!
We have been told too many times we stick our noses in where it is not needed. This is just one more of those times.

Thank you and good luck.

T’is the Season

For most of the world this is the time of Christmas. It is a time for celebration and giving. For peace and good will. Though the timing of the feast is based both on pagan and Jewish celebrations, the underlying message is profound.

The era of peace and selflessness will start with a single day. Let this day, the 25th of December 2004, be that day. May all mankind embrace the edict of giving of oneself toward world peace! Let hate be a word placed in antiquity and forgotten.

I can not give the world this gift, but we, as a people can! No matter your religious beliefs or nationality, let peace stand in the foreground of all things. Set aside all pettiness and self-centeredness. Let, if not love, tolerance stand between conflicts. Tolerance is not peace, but it can lead to it.

Start today by saying “I will not hate today, I will have tolerance for another’s differences” and mean it. One day is the first step to the next. String days together and soon they become a lifetime. Lifetimes become eras, and soon the pettiness is forgotten completely.

Let us all give the gift of tolerance to the world and peace will surely follow. Imagine a day when no one dies from violence.

War cannot be, if tolerance stands tall in the minds of all.

Disclaimer: I know this one is not up to par, but I wanted to at least get the thought out. I can only hope at least a few people will see the value and wisdom of peace and tolerance. We have men and woman dying daily for their beliefs. We have people killing because of their intolerance of another’s beliefs. Let the killing and dying stop. To everyone I wish a happy holiday, and a long and peaceful life.

Christmas 2004

T’is the week before Christmas and all is a blur,
We have states without governors, what a stir.

With snow in the Midwest, in the north too,
Cold temperatures and strong winds turn everyone blue.

Yes winter is here so what’s to say.
Texas may see snow in South Padre.

Wars rage all over, our military dying for peace,
OPEC, for profit will supply oil in decrease.

Leaders cry in outrage to stop all the blood,
Tell OPEC we’re bleeding out at the pump.

Raising prices and taxes, it’s all the rage,
Just so politicians can stand center stage.

Do not despair, all is not lost,
Heed our government, they’re the boss.

Be joyfully happy and full of good cheer,
Keep your family close and credit card near.

Spend all your money, as fast as you can,
The foot steps you hear, is Uncle Sam.

Put a log on the fire, turn out the light,
Snuggle your loved ones close and say GOOD NIGHT.

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday to all born on this day. Today in 1770 the world welcomed Ludwig Van Beethoven, one of the best known and beloved composers. He took the music world to another realm.

Just 230 years after the birth of Beethoven, in the same country of Germany, my granddaughter was born, Sarah Silny. May she and all born on this day know the joys of music without the heartbreak Beethoven knew.

Christmas

Christmas is once again upon us. A time of year everyone speaks of the Christmas spirit and gift buying. I loathe what Christmas has become, especially in the United States. It’s bad in other parts of the world, but nowhere is it like we have made it.

Why is everyone so enthralled with sending cards to people they seldom talk to, buy gifts they can ill afford and creating light displays to outdo the entire neighborhood? Caroling, snowmen, Santa Claus and again, presents all seem to spell Christmas.

The word “Christmas” comes from Christ's Mass, but I will not get into all the pagan aspects of the whole thing. Christ's Mass was a Roman Catholic sacrament (sacrifice) which Jesus was physically sacrificed into wafer and wine. This is called “transubstantiation" and was only taken by the priests to pay for their sins. It had nothing to do with the populous. It has nothing to do with trees, lights nor egocentrism. In fact, it had nothing to do with anything we think of today.

Christmas in the 1800’s became the celebration of the Christ child, before that it had little meaning. Through the years, everything has changed, including the message. The true message should be LOVE. When a child is born, everyone appears to love him or her. A child is a sign of love. The birth of a child known as the prince of peace should be even more love.

The notion of Christmas being the celebration of the birth of Jesus was an evolution. It has evolved many times over the ages. One of the many corruptions of Christmas is the seemly obligatory purchase, giving and receiving of gifts. This is all loosely based on the age-old story of the three wise men. The gifts they gave were gold, frankincense and myrrh. Why? What was the intent and purpose of these gifts? Well gold for general living, not to buy toys, frankincense and myrrh are two ingredients used to make incense. This is telling as incense was not used on a daily basis, but saved for religious events and death. So in essence, the gifts were for the continuation of life and preparing the coming death, the full cycle of life. They had nothing to do with making the child happy. They were gifts given to a child these men saw as a mighty king, as a homage if you will. That child and his teachings are the gift to you and your children. Nowhere in the story does it say to buy presents; it says, rejoice in his coming.

The way we represent Christmas is passed on from generation to generation. It is getting worse with each one. It has come to the point when no one really thinks about the holiday being a celebration of a child born who changed the world. It is now a time to spend, spend, spend. Is it time are Christmas to evolve again?

Forget going to the mall and give your children the gift they need for life, LOVE. I know the retailers will hate me for this, but they have been a major reason for the bastardization Christmas as it was years ago. Give gifts if you will but make them love and caring. If you just have to spend money, give it to those who need it more than you, but make it a gift no one knows came from you. If you give something and let people know you gave it, then it is only something you are doing to show others what a good person you are. That is selfish and a self-centered act, and has nothing to do with the idea of Christmas. To give a gift no one knows of is truly a gift and is a delight to the soul.

If everyone would give the gift of LOVE and only have love in all their actions for just one day, the world would be a better place to live. If everyone could do it for one day, then maybe, just maybe, they could do it for two days, then a week, and so on. A world filled with love every day would be a world of peace. Just think of a world without war, hate or greed. That would be a real gift to the prince of peace.

If you really can only show your love by buying presents, why wait for one time a year. Do it daily, unless you only love and care once a year. Make the spirit of Christmas a daily event, to give selflessly without regard of reward.

In place of Christmas lights, show the light of love. That is a light show without any competition or self-interest. Save the trees to view in nature and the electricity to heat your homes. You will find a brighter view and a warmer feeling inside than from the feigned facsimile we put forth now.

If you really have to buy a gift for your children, do they truly need a new video game? Buy them a book, they can learn and have fun at the same time, or a pet to teach them love and compassion. Do your aunts, uncles, siblings or any other friend or family member really need a new DVD, do you? Give them the gift of you, spend time with them, everyone will be better for it. Without the DVD’s, video games or TV, you will have time to talk. When was the last time you just sat and talked to your family? If you have to think about it, it has been too long.

Let this year be the first year you don’t pull you checkbook or credit card out to line the pockets of retailers. Pull out the love you have deep in your heart and share it with everyone you see. That would make this a holiday all religions could embrace, a day of world love and peace. If you have already bought into the Christmas of today, let the Christmas of 2004 start today.

A smile filled with love can brighten the world better than any Christmas light display invented. Try to compare your house decorations to the beaming face of a child, there is none. Love and caring are the true gifts of Christmas and you can’t buy them in a store. If half the energy we put forth to make Christmas as it is today was put into love, you have no idea the difference it could make. It is time we brought Christmas back to the place it should be, a time to celebrate peace and love in the form of a child, every child, as we are all children. The more love you give, the more love you have. Rejoice and celebrate a Christmas of love and caring. Remember, on the scales of the Almighty, all the Christmas gifts ever given can not balance with one act of love.

Pearl Harbor Day

Just a short ‘Thank You’ to all the men and women who have given their lives to keep this nation free. Today is the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the death of thousands of military members. The reason this is a short thank you; I do not have, nor believe anyone truly has the words to give a proper thank you. Only our thoughts and actions can convey what their sacrifice truly means.

See if you like it

Here is an excerpt of a book I'm working on. Just thought I'd put it out there to see what people think about it.

Chapter 1
The Dream

The full, bold face of the moon showed through the scattered, ribbon thin clouds, as it lit the ground. The gusty winter wind blew through the barren trees to chill the bone. He felt the numbing as he waited in the shadows. It seemed time had stopped and he had crouched by that bush for all time. Out of the corner of his eye, something moved or did it? Was he numb from cold or fear? A sound, or not? Was someone or something there? Nerves, it had to be nerves but he put his left hand on his dagger anyway, just to feel it. The other hand felt for the small pouch at his waist as he looked to the field that lay before him. He looked to the high moon as he whispered, “I guess it’s time to chance it, I’ll never get there sitting here. The longer I wait, the more the chance I’ll be found out and that will do no one any good, especially me.” With that, he was on the move, a silent, swift walk with eyes looking. His ears and legs reacted at the same time to the distant howl of a wolf. He had to get to the safety of the trees and fast. Glancing back he saw nothing but the pack of white wolves coming straight for him. Ghosts coming from the mist of the forest he had left only moments before. If he had waited any longer they would have had him by now, with no chance of escape. Why had he waited at all, he knew time was short.

“With the whole pack on my heels, the trees will be of no help at all,” he thought in his racing mind. “I’ll have to get to the bog, it’s my only hope. If they catch me now all is lost. It’ll all be for naught.” He was muttering aloud to himself now. It seemed to add speed to his legs. He felt the breath of the beast on his neck. Grabbing the dagger and turning in mid stride, the lead wolf was on him. A flash of the dagger blade in the moonlight and blood flew as man and beast left the ground, to air, to water. He felt the teeth in his shoulder and the bite of icy water all at the same time…….

He awoke with a pounding heart afraid to move. Had it been a dream or was he dead. He tensed his muscles just a bit to feel them move. No, not dead, yes it was a dream, the same dream as before. It all was coming back to him. He was in a nice feather bed with no wolf bites, only the scars one gets in war. The wounds had healed on his body but not his soul and he knew it. He was still at war but not for King and Country, for himself, with himself. Every day is a new war and the first battle was to get out from under the duvet and meet the day, be it morning or more the like, after. The night before was now rolling back into his brain as a cloudy day or night as the case may be.
